Or had we? Judging by the anticipation and very early reaction a dozen years later to Serious Sam 3: BFE, an FPS throwback if there ever was one, maybe not. We'd clearly moved on to new and better things. Where was the originality? The realism? What about a shooter that taxed our brains as much as it taxed our trigger fingers? By the turn of the millennium, the truly wanton FPS was on its death bed and the rise of the thinking man's FPS was nigh. Awesome. But too much of a good thing can sometimes wear people out, and eventually the criticisms began rolling in. You walk into a back alley and find 1 point of armor laying on the ground followed by a congratulatory message letting you know you've done well only to lose 60 armor and 35 health to the three horse-skeleton things that were guarding it. Please stop reminding me.Įdit: one detail I like to see has returned are the secrets. Blowing up barrels results in a large field of debris as well so again, I can't see what I need to shoot at.Īnd finally, what is the 'Press x to melee' message that is CONSTANTLY popping up? I know I can rip this creature's eyeball out. It'd be nice if this could be turned off. I could just keep blasting away but then I'll be wasting ammo and the dust will never clear. I dislike having to wait for it to clear before I can begin shooting again. I feel there are too many details slowing the game down. This is obviously a matter of taste and I am certain I am in the minority in feeling this way.īattles were just balls-out chaos and mayhem in the first one. It is a great looking game no doubt, but it doesn't belong. The 'realistic' look this new one has feels out of place with the world. I had played through the first two games a couple times and I must say, I actually miss their cartoonish graphics. I like the boss introductions and the cut scenes as well. The engine is very pretty and the sound track is awesome, which is not something I ever pay attention to. The new melee moves are inventive and powerful. Just checked some of the Steam achievements and there are a bunch that do seem geared towards either a bare handed combat or melee weapons.

Oh and as is normal for me, I'm missing out on secrets, found 1 out of 15 I think on the first full level. Also it seems like when you start a new level/section the game will put you at 50 health (this is on Normal, I would expect this to be different on higher difficulty settings). When in dark areas you automatically turn on a flashlight which is nice touch. Not sure if ammo will be different since I only have the pistol. Graphically the Gnarr are the biggest departure from the originals, but that was expected after watching the trailers. The purple rocket (the normal grunts) guy's attacks are still fairly easy to dodge. Once I found a pistol the action in the game started to pick up, and became more like the Serious Sam I remember. Thankfully they're not throwing a ton of enemies at you at this point so I wasn't getting overwhelmed. It took me awhile to find my first gun (pistol) and just felt a bit odd to be playing a Serious Sam game with a sledge hammer as my only weapon for as long as I did. It feels like early on the devs want you to get used to using melee in the game right off the bat. I need to fiddle with settings some as I'm experiencing some motion sickness at times when playing (so far V-sync enabled has helped this). So far I've only played about an hour on normal of the single player campaign. If someone posted about this already, my apologies, but I didn't see a thread for this yet so I figured I should start.
